Humanity In Action

HIA invites applications from current students (college sophomores, juniors, and seniors) and recent graduates (classes of 2008 and 2009) who are intellectually gifted, mature, independent, and passionate about human rights and social justice. Please forward this email to students who may be qualified for participation. The HIA summer fellowship programs bring together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and human rights doctrines in democratic societies. Separate programs will take place for five weeks in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, and Warsaw. Applications are due on January 23, 2010.

We hope you agree that this is a wonderful opportunity for college students and recent graduates you may know, and that you will forward this email widely. Students of all majors and academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. Full application materials are available on our website at: http://www.humanityinaction.org/apply/usa

ZSR-Accepting Applications for Fellow

What is the role of a ZSR fellow?

The fellow acts as a junior program officer, taking increasing responsibility over the course of two years in evaluating grant proposals, visiting with grant applicants, assisting with grantmaking administration, working on projects of significance to the Foundation, and providing additional support to the Foundation staff as needed. Through the grant process and related programs, the fellow gains experience with nonprofit organizations, Foundation trustees, public policy advocates, and other leaders across North Carolina. Each fellow has the opportunity to assist in furthering projects related to the five focus areas of the Foundation: community economic development, democracy and civic engagement, the environment, pre-collegiate education, and social justice and equity. At the same time, the fellowship is structured so to enable the fellow to engage in personal professional development concerning issues of interest to the fellow and of importance to the Foundation. The fellowship will provide a competitive compensation package including salary, medical and dental insurance, life insurance, opportunities for professional development, and reimbursement of expenses incurred through Foundation business.

Who should apply?

Applicants must be natives or residents of North Carolina and/or graduates of an institution of higher learning in the state.  Preference will be given to applicants in early stages of their careers; generally, persons who have recently completed undergraduate or graduate programs.  The Foundation is committed to building a diverse pool of candidates and encourages applications from people of color.

2009 Festival of Trees is approaching!

We are getting ready for the 2009 Festival of Trees and now is the time to sign up to volunteer!

The Festival of Trees will be held on November 21 and 22 at the Education Building on the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. The Festival of Trees is a fun event for all ages but more importantly a major fundraising event for Brenner Children’s Hospital. We are very excited about this popular annual holiday event and the opportunities it allows for increased funding for Brenner Children’s Hospital’s pediatric initiatives. Volunteer participation is vital to the success of this event.

We need  volunteers the week of November 17-22. Volunteers do a variety of tasks from “fluffing” trees, decorating Santa’s Room and the Gingerbread Village, to selling raffle tickets and admissions tickets, painting faces and making crafts in the Christmas Playland or even boxing up 40 7-1/2’ trees. We need lots of volunteers for the Festival!

Attached is the volunteer registration form  and we hope you will send it back as soon as possible. Please feel free to pass the volunteer information along to another school organization, church group or anyone else that would like to support the Children’s Hospital by volunteering. Please know that we are extremely grateful for any amount of time you are able to volunteer.

If you have any questions feel free to contact Cindy Caines at 716-6285.

Thank you for supporting Brenner Children’s Hospital. We hope to see you at the Festival of Trees!

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS!

Due to the recent outbreak of the H1N1 flu, we are asking all volunteers to stay at home if you or your roommate has been ill.  If you have been ill, please wait until you get better so nothing is spread.  We look forward to seeing you volunteer again once you are well.
